Getting Started with My Dublin Points Project

So, the other day, I had this idea. Kinda popped into my head while I was just fiddling around online, looking at maps. Dublin. I’ve always been curious about it, not just the big tourist spots everyone knows. I wanted to, like, find my own points of interest there. Not for any big reason, just for myself, you know? A little project. So I called it my “point a dublin” thing in my notes.

First thing I did was pull up a big digital map of the city center. Spent a good hour just zooming in and out, getting a feel for the layout. Streets branching off, little alleyways. It felt kinda overwhelming at first. Where do I even begin?

Digging In and Finding Spots

I decided not to go for the usual stuff like the Castle or Temple Bar. Nah, I wanted something different. Maybe hidden history things, or spots mentioned in old books I read. So, I started searching online, but not just “top 10 things to do.” More like digging into local history forums, reading old blogs, looking at archives if I could find any easy ones. It was slow going.

Here’s basically what I did:

  • Found mentions of interesting old shop signs or architectural details.
  • Tried to pinpoint them using Street View on the map. This was tricky! Sometimes things had changed, or the view was blocked.
  • Made a list. Just a simple text file at first: Street name, rough location, what the point was.
  • Cross-referenced stuff. Found a mention of an old plaque on one site, then tried to verify it on another or see if anyone had posted a picture. Lots of dead ends, honestly.
  • Spent ages virtually “walking” down streets. Click, click, click. Looking left and right. Sometimes I’d spot something cool totally by accident. Added that to my list too.

This took way longer than I thought. Some evenings I’d just spend an hour finding maybe one or two decent points. Sometimes none. Frustrating? Yeah, a bit. But also kinda satisfying when I found something that felt like a little discovery.

Making My Own Map

After a week or so, my list had maybe 20-something points. Not a huge number, but they felt like mine. So, the next step was putting them onto a map properly. I used one of those online tools where you can create custom maps. Dropped pins for each point. Added my notes about why I picked that spot.

It’s nothing fancy. Just a simple map with my personal points marked out. Looking at it now, it feels pretty cool. Like a little treasure map I made myself. Don’t know if I’ll ever actually use it in Dublin, but the process of making it, the “pointing” part, that was the fun bit. Just exploring and finding things my own way, even if it was just digitally for now. It was a good way to spend some evenings.
