Okay, so let’s talk about getting some serious heat in Sleeping Dogs.

My First Steps – Looking Around
When I first jumped into Hong Kong in the game, I kinda expected guns to be, you know, around. Like in other open-world games. You figure you can just find one tucked away or buy one easily. So, I spent a good chunk of time just driving around, checking alleys, looking behind buildings. Found plenty of melee stuff, pipes, knives, you name it. But actual firearms? Not so much. It was mostly fists and feet, which is cool, the combat system is great, but sometimes you just want that extra firepower, right?
Realizing How It Works – Story Stuff
Then I started focusing more on the main story missions. That’s where I first got my hands on guns regularly. Boom! Suddenly I’m in a shootout, blasting away. It felt awesome. But here’s the kicker: after the mission? The gun usually disappeared. Poof. Gone. You don’t get to keep it. So, story missions give you a taste, but it’s only temporary. That was a bit of a letdown initially. I wanted something I could rely on, something I could grab whenever I felt like it.
The Breakthrough – Side Activities Matter
I kept playing, doing more than just the main story. Started tackling some of those drug busts for the cops. Little side missions, you know? And favors for people around the city. I wasn’t really thinking about guns at this point, just enjoying the game and clearing the map.
Then it happened. After completing a bunch of these drug busts – I think it was after clearing a whole district’s worth – I went back to one of Wei’s safehouses. Just routinely checking things out. And what do I see available? A pistol! Not one I picked up off a bad guy, but one that seemed to be permanently unlocked for me at the safehouse.
Getting Armed – The Actual Process
So, that became my new focus. I realized specific side activities were the key. Here’s basically what I did:

- I actively started seeking out and completing all the Drug Bust events on the map. There are quite a few.
- After finishing a set number of them (it seemed linked to completing all busts in a specific area or maybe just hitting a total number), I’d head back to a safehouse.
- I’d check the weapon stash or designated spot inside the safehouse.
- Slowly but surely, different guns started appearing there. First a basic pistol, then later I think an SMG showed up after doing more side stuff, maybe some specific favors too, I recall.
Finally Packing Heat
It wasn’t like finding guns lying on the street, that’s for sure. You gotta work for it by cleaning up the city in those side missions. But doing those police cases and favors gradually unlocks firearms that you can then pick up from your safehouse whenever you want before heading out. It takes time and effort, focusing on those specific tasks, but that’s how I finally managed to get a reliable source of guns in Sleeping Dogs. It felt pretty good to finally have that option available whenever I wanted it, even if the game clearly wants you to use your martial arts most of the time.
