My Day Out at Fishburn Golf

So, I kept hearing whispers about this place, Fishburn Golf. Not the fancy country club type, just a name that popped up now and then. Sounded kinda old-school, maybe a bit rough. Curiosity got the better of me, you know? Decided one Tuesday, heck, let’s just go see what it’s all about. Didn’t expect much, honestly.

Grabbed my old clubs from the garage. Haven’t cleaned them in ages, but figured they’d do. Checked the weather, looked okay-ish, bit cloudy but no rain forecast. Threw the bag in the trunk, put on my comfy sneakers, not even proper golf shoes, and just drove over there. Took me a bit to find it, tucked away behind some industrial park. First sign I saw was faded, almost missed it.

Pulling up, yeah, it wasn’t shiny. The parking lot was mostly gravel. The clubhouse, if you could call it that, looked like a small cabin. Simple. Went inside, paid my fee. The guy behind the counter was friendly enough, kinda gruff but polite. Told me to just head out when ready. No fuss, no complicated check-in. I liked that.

The Course Itself

Walked to the first tee. The grass was… well, it was grass. Not perfectly manicured like those expensive places, but playable. The layout seemed straightforward at first glance. Started playing. Took a few swings to get loose. The fairways were narrow on some holes, trees everywhere. Lost a ball on the third hole already. Typical.

  • The greens were slow. Really had to whack the putts.
  • Some tee boxes were a bit uneven. Had to find a good spot to stand.
  • Found a couple of really interesting holes though, doglegs through woods. Challenging in a different way.

Wasn’t crowded at all. Saw maybe two other groups the whole time, mostly older guys who looked like they played there every day. We just nodded as we passed. It felt quiet, peaceful even, despite being near that industrial area. Just the sound of birds and the occasional thwack of a golf ball.

What I Reckon

Finished my round. Didn’t shoot my best score, not by a long shot. Those trees got me more than once. But you know what? I actually had a pretty good time. It wasn’t pretending to be anything it wasn’t. Just a basic place to hit a golf ball around.

Was it perfect?

Nah, course conditions could be better. Facilities are bare-bones. But sometimes, that’s okay. It felt real, grounded. No pressure, no stuffiness. Just golf. Sometimes you just want to play without all the extra nonsense.

Would I go back? Yeah, probably. If I just want a quick, no-frills round, Fishburn Golf works. It’s got character, I guess. Reminded me of playing munis back in the day. Simple, cheap, and you get what you pay for, which was fine by me that afternoon.
