But connecting them? Making sure they were the same Joseph Menefee, or even figuring out which one was the one I was vaguely thinking of? Impossible. The records are often just scans, sometimes hard to read, and names get misspelled all the time. Menefee, Manifee, Menifee… you name it.
It really got me thinking. We spend so much time documenting the big events, the important people. But the stories of just regular folks, guys like maybe this Joseph Menefee was, they just fade away. Their records get lost, their graves become unmarked. It’s like they were barely here.
Reminds me of trying to sort out my own family tree a while back. Hit a similar wall with my great-aunt Sarah. Records burned in a courthouse fire, family stories contradicted each other.
