Okay, so the weekend was rolling in, and I found myself thinking, what am I actually gonna do here in Plymouth? Don’t fancy just sitting around the house, you know?

First thing, I just sorta browsed online a bit. Typed in the usual stuff, “what’s on Plymouth”, “weekend Plymouth”. Lots of things popped up, events here, markets there. Honestly, half of it looked like too much effort or cost a bit too much for what it was.

I remembered chatting with my neighbor, old Jim, and he mentioned he’d had a nice walk down the Barbican the other day. Thought, yeah, alright, haven’t done that properly in a while. So, Saturday morning, that was the plan.

Saturday: Hitting The Barbican

Got myself down there about mid-morning. Weather wasn’t too bad, bit cloudy but didn’t rain, which was a bonus. Started just by wandering around those old cobbled streets. It’s got a certain feel to it, hasn’t it? All the old buildings packed together.

Saw the usual stuff:

  • Lots of little shops selling touristy bits and bobs.
  • Galleries with paintings, looked in a few windows.
  • The Mayflower Steps, of course. Always stop there for a minute. Makes you think about all that history.

It was getting fairly busy with people milling about. Decided I needed a bite to eat. You can’t go wrong with a pasty down there, can you? Found a little bakery, grabbed one, and sat on a bench watching the boats bobbing in Sutton Harbour. Proper job.

Spent a good few hours just soaking it in, really. Didn’t rush. Just walked, looked, ate. Simple stuff.

Sunday: Up on The Hoe

Sunday, I felt like getting a bit of fresh air and some views. The Hoe is the obvious choice, isn’t it? Headed up there after lunch.

It was windier up there, definitely. You get that sea breeze right off the Sound. The view, though, still gets me. Seeing Drake’s Island, Mount Edgcumbe across the water, ferries coming and going. It’s quite something.

Walked along the front, past Smeaton’s Tower. Didn’t bother going up it this time, just enjoyed the walk. Saw the war memorials, paid my respects. Lots of families were out, kids running about, people flying kites. It had a nice, relaxed Sunday feel.

Didn’t do anything dramatic. Just walked, took in the view, breathed in the sea air. Headed home feeling like I’d actually done something with my weekend, instead of letting it just disappear.

So yeah, that was my Plymouth weekend. Nothing too fancy, just got out and about in my own city. Sometimes that’s all you need. The Barbican walk and a bit of time on The Hoe did the trick.
