Alright folks, let me tell you about my attempt at mastering the volley shot today. It was… an experience.

First off, I watched a bunch of YouTube videos. You know, the usual drill – slow-motion replays, pros explaining the grip, the stance, the whole shebang. Felt like I was ready to go out there and dominate. Spoiler alert: I was not.
So, I head to the court, feeling all confident. Started with some simple feeds from my buddy. Just trying to get the feel of the ball hitting the racquet before it bounces. Sounds easy, right? Wrong. My first few attempts went straight into the net. Then, a couple sailed way long. I was hitting everything but the sweet spot.
Next, I tried to focus on my footwork. The videos kept saying, “Get your feet moving! Short, choppy steps!” Easier said than done when a ball is flying at you. I ended up tripping over myself more than once. Felt like a clumsy giraffe trying to dance. Hilarious, but not exactly effective.
Then came the grip. Continental, they said. Like holding a hammer, they said. Well, my hammer must be broken, because I couldn’t seem to get the right angle. Kept switching between too much wrist and not enough. Every shot felt awkward and forced.
After about an hour of flailing, I finally started to get a little bit of a rhythm. Still shanked a ton of shots, but every now and then, I’d connect and actually get the ball back over the net with some pace. A minor victory, I suppose.

I tried focusing on keeping my racquet head up and blocking the ball. That seemed to help a little with control. But my reach was terrible. Anything wide, and I was toast. My buddy was practically laughing as he ran me ragged.
Finally, we worked on some volleys at the net. This was slightly better, probably because I had less time to overthink things. Still, my reactions were slow, and my technique was all over the place. I was basically just sticking my racquet out and hoping for the best. Occasionally, it worked. Mostly, it didn’t.
Ended the session completely exhausted and feeling like I had a long way to go. My forehand volley is definitely a disaster zone. Backhand is marginally better, but still needs a ton of work. But hey, at least I got some exercise and a good laugh out of it.
So, what did I learn?
- YouTube videos are great for theory, but they don’t replace actual practice.
- Footwork is key, and mine needs a serious overhaul.
- The continental grip is still a mystery to me.
- Volleying is way harder than it looks.
- I need a lot more practice… a lot more.
Tomorrow, I’m gonna try focusing on just one thing – maybe the footwork. Baby steps, right? Wish me luck!
