First roadblock hit pretty quick. He’s looking through his menus on the Xbox Series X. I’m digging through my Steam server options. We couldn’t find any obvious way to ‘see’ each other. I thought maybe I needed to give him my server IP address, like you do for some PC-to-PC connections. So, I found my IP, sent it over.
He spent a while poking around on the Xbox interface. Turns out, there’s just no spot on the console version to type in an IP address to join a game directly. That felt… odd. Why leave that out? That was the first big clue this wasn’t going to be straightforward.
Okay, plan A failed. Time for plan B: hit the web and see what the deal really is. This is where things got a bit muddy. I saw posts here and there, some saying “yes, cross-play exists!”, others flat out “no”. It took a bit of reading between the lines to get the real picture.
Sorting Through the Noise

- PlayStation plays with PlayStation: Same story over there. PS4 players can connect with PS5 players. Again, same console family.
- Xbox vs. PlayStation? Nope. No connection between the two different console brands. They stay separate.
But the big question: What about Xbox and PC?
This is where the answer became a clear ‘no’. Despite some games managing it, Terraria doesn’t support direct cross-platform play between consoles (like Xbox) and PC (like the Steam version). That missing IP join option on the console was a dead giveaway. The systems just aren’t set up to talk to each other in Terraria.
So, after trying to connect, searching around, and understanding the limitations (like the console IP thing), the reality sunk in. My friend on his Xbox and me on my PC couldn’t just hop into the same Terraria world.
