So, this “what’s your street name” thing. You’ve seen it around, right? Pops up on your feed, everyone’s having a go. Most of the time, I just scroll past that sort of stuff. Honestly, who’s got the time? But the other day, I was waiting for the kettle to boil, nothing much else doing, and I thought, alright, let’s see what nonsense this is.
The formula I saw was pretty standard: your first pet’s name plus the name of the street you grew up on. Dead simple. So, I wracked my brain a bit. My first pet… that’d be old Buster. A scruffy little mongrel, mostly Jack Russell, full of beans. And the street? Grew up on a little cul-de-sac called Ash Grove. Solid, dependable name, Ash Grove.

So, I put them together. Buster Ash. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? Got a bit of a ring to it. Not exactly “Scarface,” but you know, could be worse. I sort of chuckled to myself. Buster Ash. Sounds like a character from an old Western film, maybe a friendly bartender or a slightly down-on-his-luck private eye.
I mentioned it to my wife later. She decided to try. Her first pet was a goldfish named Bubbles. And she lived on Orchard Close. So, she came up with “Bubbles Orchard.” We both had a good laugh at that. She said it sounded like a brand of fizzy drink for kids. Definitely not going to be her new nickname, she declared.
It’s funny, these little games. You spend two minutes on them, get a silly name, and then what? Does it mean anything? Probably not. Just another bit of internet fluff designed to get a click or a comment. Most days, I’d say it’s a complete waste of perfectly good brain cells.
But Then You Start Thinking…
But then, later on, I found myself thinking about Buster. Proper little character, that dog. Hadn’t thought about him in donkey’s years. Remembered the way he used to tear around the garden, the chewed-up slippers. And Ash Grove – suddenly I’m picturing the big conker tree at the end of the road, the dodgy fence I used to climb over to get to my mate’s house. All these little pictures started popping into my head.
So, yeah, it started as a stupid internet game. But it ended up jogging a few old memories. Pleasant ones, mostly. It’s weird how that happens. Something completely trivial can just unlock a little door in your mind you’d forgotten was even there. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it?
I’m not about to change my email signature to “Buster Ash, formerly known as me.” And I doubt “Bubbles Orchard” will be answering to her new moniker anytime soon. But for a few minutes, it was a bit of a distraction. A harmless one. And it got us talking about old pets and childhood streets, which wasn’t so bad, actually.
I suppose that’s the pull of these things. A little bit of silliness, a tiny bit of connection, maybe a quick trip down memory lane. In a world that’s always rushing and shouting, maybe these small, daft things have their place after all. Or maybe I just needed that cup of tea. Who knows.
