So, I finally made it out to the Berlin Tennis Open this year, the 2024 one. Been meaning to check out some live tennis for a while, and well, this seemed like a good shot. Didn’t really plan it much, just sort of decided a week or so before, “Yeah, let’s do this.”
Getting Tickets and Actually Going
First off, getting tickets. What a hassle, honestly. I hopped online thinking it’d be a breeze, but nope. The really good seats, the ones where you can practically smell the grass, were either gone or cost a fortune. I remember clicking refresh like a madman, kinda like trying to get concert tickets for that one band everyone loves. You know the drill. Ended up grabbing something in a decent enough section, not complaining too much, but it definitely wasn’t front row. Still, ticket secured, that was the main thing. I even had this old tennis cap I dug out, thought it’d be fitting. Haven’t worn that thing in years, probably since I last played a terrible game of tennis myself. That was a disaster, let me tell you. Stick to watching, that’s my motto now.
Anyway, the day came, and I headed out. Jumped on the train, the S-Bahn, which was surprisingly straightforward. Figured it’d be a nightmare with a big event, but it moved pretty smoothly. Though, yeah, it started to get packed. You could tell who was going to the tennis; folks had their caps on, some even in tennis gear. Always a bit of a buzz in the air when you’re all heading to the same place, isn’t there?
At the Venue
Got to the grounds, and it was already pretty lively. People milling about, the smell of food in the air – bratwurst, pretzels, the usual German stadium fare. I walked around a bit first, just to take it all in. They had a few smaller courts going, and the main court area looked impressive. It’s funny, you see these places on TV, and they look big, but when you’re actually there, it feels different, more real.
Finding my actual seat was a bit of an adventure. The signage wasn’t super clear, or maybe I was just being a bit dense. Walked in a circle once, I think. But hey, eventually found it. The view was pretty good, actually. Better than I expected from my online ticket battle. Could see the whole court, no problem.
The Tennis Itself
Then the matches started. I watched a couple of different games. The power these players have is just nuts. You hear the thwack of the ball, and it’s so much louder and crisper than on TV. And the speed! They cover the court so fast. There were a few really tense rallies that got the crowd going. Everyone oohing and aahing. That’s the best part, being part of that shared excitement.

- Some incredible defensive plays, people stretching for balls I thought were long gone.
- The focus on their faces – intense!
There was this one young player, didn’t catch her name properly, but she was a fighter. Down a set, looked like she was out of it, but she just dug in. You gotta respect that kind of grit. Didn’t end up winning her match while I was there, but she definitely won some fans, me included.
I grabbed a pretzel at some point. Cost more than it should have, of course. Standard event pricing, right? But you gotta have a snack. Watched a bit more, the sun started to beat down, and I could feel myself getting a bit tired. It’s a long day if you’re there for multiple matches.
Wrapping Up
Decided to head out before it got too crazy with everyone leaving at once. The walk back to the train was buzzing with people talking about the matches, comparing who they thought would win the whole thing. It’s always fun to listen in on those chats.
Overall, pretty cool experience. Glad I went. It’s one of those things, you know? You say you’ll do it, and then life gets in the way. But this time, I actually followed through. Maybe next year I’ll try for those fancy seats. Or maybe I’ll just stick to my usual, slightly-further-back-but-still-good-enough spot. We’ll see how the bank account feels!
