Alright folks, let me tell you about my journey trying to recreate that Jamal Murray dunk. You know the one! It looked so effortless on TV, but trust me, it’s a whole different ball game when you’re trying to pull it off yourself.
First things first, I warmed up. I’m not getting any younger, and the last thing I needed was to pull a hamstring trying to launch myself. Did some basic stretches, a little jogging, and some practice jumps just to get the blood flowing.
Then came the actual dunk attempt. I started simple, just trying to get the feel of jumping and reaching for the net. Let me tell you, my vertical ain’t what it used to be! I was barely grazing the rim.
Next, I focused on my approach. I watched some videos of Murray’s dunk again, paying close attention to his footwork and the angle he took to the basket. Tried to mimic that, but my own version was a bit…clumsy. More like a lumbering bear than a graceful athlete, to be honest.
- I kept practicing my run-up, trying to build momentum without losing control.
- Then, I tried timing my jump better, focusing on exploding upwards at the right moment.
- And finally, I worked on extending my arm fully to reach the ball and slam it down.
There were a lot of missed dunks, a few near-misses where I almost lost my balance, and one particularly embarrassing moment where I completely whiffed and landed flat on my face. Good times!
I also tried to increase my jumping power. Did some squats, some calf raises, even tried a few plyometric exercises. I’m not sure if it actually helped my vertical, but at least I felt like I was doing something.

I spent hours in the gym, sweating and grunting, trying to get that dunk down. Did I eventually nail it? Well, not exactly like Murray. My dunk was more of a glorified layup with a bit more airtime. But hey, I touched the net consistently, and that’s progress in my book.
Biggest lesson learned? Jamal Murray makes it look way easier than it actually is. Respect to those guys in the NBA. I’ll stick to watching them on TV from now on, but at least I can say I gave it a shot!
