Discover whats something you have done and never do again and save big hassle

I gotta tell you about my big paint disaster last year. Seriously, folks, unless you’re a pro with nothing but time on your hands, do not try to paint your entire kitchen cabinets yourself. One weekend, feeling super motivated after binge-watching home reno shows, I dove right in. Big mistake.

How It All Went Down

I started strong Saturday morning. Yanked all the cabinet doors off their hinges – that part felt easy! Didn’t bother labeling where each one went though. “I’ll remember,” I thought. Famous last words. Then I grabbed this supposedly “miracle” paint that promised “no sanding needed!” Yeah, right.

Slapped that first coat on the frame. Looked okay-ish, a bit streaky. While that dried, I laid the doors out on drop cloths in the garage. Started painting them one by one. An hour in, my arm felt like lead, and I realized I missed a bunch of spots near the hinges. Paint was pooling along the edges, making weird drips that dried like little boogers. Had to sand those down mid-process, spitting curses the whole time.

The Nightmare Unfolds

Let me list why it sucked so bad:

  • The Drips & Runs: That “no drip” paint lied. Ended up with streaks thicker than my patience.
  • The Drying Disaster: Put on a second coat too soon ’cause I was impatient. Big wrinkles formed, like elephant skin. Had to sand half of ’em again.
  • Door Purgatory: Ran out of space drying doors. Propped some against the wall… slipped and chipped the wet paint. Re-did three doors.
  • The Hinge Horror: Remember when I didn’t label anything? Had to trial-and-error every single door back onto its frame. Hours wasted jiggling screws.

Three days later – THREE DAYS – I finally finished. Except the cabinets felt sticky for weeks. Like, crumbs literally stuck to them. Bottle caps would leave rings. Wiping them just smeared grime into the “perfect” finish.

Why I’ll Never Touch a Paintbrush Again

It just wasn’t worth it. I destroyed my weekend, my garage looked like a paint bomb went off, and the results? Meh. They looked okay from across the room if you squinted. Close up? Embarrassing. Two months later, near the sink, the paint started peeling where I skipped sanding.

I saved maybe $500 doing it myself. But losing an entire long weekend covered in paint fumes? Dealing with sticky cabinets for months? Zero stars. Do not recommend. Hire the pros. Pay the money. Save your sanity. Lesson learned the frickin’ hard way.
