So a buddy kept bugging me about this Tempest Runner game last week. Said it’s like sci-fi poker meets spaceship battles. Grabbed it cheap on sale Tuesday night thinking “how hard could it be?” Spoiler: got my butt kicked the first five matches straight.

Started real basic: downloaded the app store version on my phone. That tutorial? Total trash. Showed flashy cards zooming around but didn’t explain why my purple fleet kept getting toasted by tiny green ships. Had to Google translate half the menu buttons too – default language was Korean for some dang reason.
Finally figured the important stuff:
- DON’T touch ranked mode first unless you wanna face players who memorize card stats like it’s their tax ID
- Always burn starter deck immediately – those cards are weaker than soggy toast
- Grind daily quests for purple crystals even when losing gives you crafting mats
Changed my strategy yesterday after another losing streak. Focused all my starter crystals on Thunder-class destroyers instead of fancy hero units. Their chain lightning bounces between ships like popcorn in a microwave. Won three bot matches back-to-back! Got cocky, tried PVP – got stomped by someone running stealth frigates. Moral: always pack scanner cards.
Biggest breakthrough today? Learned you can sacrifice your own low-health ships deliberately to trigger “ion surge” effects. Felt dirty blowing up my own transports but watching the enemy flagship explode? Chefs kiss. Currently sitting at bronze tier with a cobbled-together deck:
- 3x ion pulsars (budget chain lightning)
- 2x radar drones (counter stealthed jerks)
- 1x salvage tug (free dead ships respawn!)
Still getting wrecked when opponents pull legendary cards, but hey – at least I finally figured out how energy recharge works after misclicking for two days straight. Game’s got that “just one more match” crack addiction vibe once the mechanics click. Would rate 4/5 but docking stars for the migraine-inducing tutorial.
