- Did they just play a crazy long series or extra innings? Tired teams make errors, pitchers lose sharpness. Looked at the schedule – did they just fly in from across the country after a 14-inning marathon? Bonus trouble point.
Step 2: The Underdog’s Secret Weapon (Hint: It’s Pitching)
Everyone focuses on underdog hitters needing to get hot. Forget that noise. Finding an upset usually means the underdog pitcher has to hold the damn line. I started looking specifically at the starting pitcher for the lesser team:
- Does this dude pitch way better at home? Found guys with ERAs almost 2 runs lower in their own park. That matters.
- Has he been sneaky good lately? Ignored his whole season stats. Focused on just his last 3-4 starts. Was he quietly shutting teams down? Maybe found a groove? That’s the guy.
- Does he match up weirdly well? Does the favorite have a lineup full of lefties, and this underdog pitcher just dominates left-handed bats? Or maybe he throws a sinkerball and the favorite hits too many pop-ups? Looked for specific matchups.
Step 3: The Mental Game (It’s Messy)
This is the fuzzy part, but it matters. Baseball players are people. Started paying attention to:
- Is the favorite coasting? Big division lead? Did they just clinch a playoff spot? Sometimes, they unconsciously ease up. Lackadaisical defense = underdog opportunities.
- Is the underdog backed into a corner? Fighting for a playoff spot? Trying to avoid 100 losses? Playing a bitter rival? Anger and desperation are powerful motivators. Saw hungry teams take down complacent giants.
- Any weird drama? Manager just fired? Star player benched for being late? Team bus break down? Little distractions can snowball on a favorite expected to win easily.
Putting it Together & What Happened
So, instead of betting whenever I felt a “vibe,” I forced myself to check:
1. Is the favorite potentially vulnerable (tired starter, bad road, tired team)? YES?
2. Does the underdog have a starter who might actually keep it close (home stud, hot streak, good matchup)? YES?
3. Is there any extra motivational juice (underdog desperate, favorite complacent)? YES?
Three “YES” answers? That’s when I started allowing myself a small bet on the underdog. Not every time, but following this forced me to look for reasons instead of hopes.
This season? Still lose bets, obviously. It’s gambling. But way fewer “what the hell was I thinking?” moments. Actually spotted a few juicy upsets early on that cashed nice tickets. Felt less like guessing and more like… well, slightly educated guessing. Made the whole thing way more fun.
