What does Lasix do for horses? Discover the pros and cons now!

Okay, so I’ve been around horses my whole life, right? And one thing that always comes up in racing circles is this stuff called Lasix. You hear about it all the time, especially with horses that tend to bleed from their noses after a hard run. We call those horses “bleeders”. It’s a pretty common issue, and it’s been around for ages.

I started to learn about how to use it with some friends and trainers. First, I learned some horses easily have nosebleeds, especially after running, that is called EIPH by some pros. And I paid attention to some horses, tried to record if they have nosebleeds after running. Some of them did have, and most of them are racehorses. Then I started to find some solutions for them.

So, what is this Lasix stuff anyway? Well, turns out it’s a medication, also called furosemide. But the main thing is, it’s a diuretic. That means it makes the horse pee more. I found that Lasix is a kind of medicine also called furosemide. And I got some from the vet.

Now, why would you want to make a horse pee more to stop it from bleeding from its nose? Seems weird, I know. I used a flexible fiber optic endoscope to check the horse and learned about how it happened, it is something about pressure.

I started to use it, following the instructions. And the results were pretty good, some of the “bleeders” did improve a lot, their nosebleeds are much better than before. But there are also some bad examples, one of the horses became worse, I think it is all about the amount you use.

Anyways, my point is, I tried to use Lasix to deal with the “bleeders”, and it works sometimes, I think that needs more practice.
