Inside Helmet Camera: Capture Your Ride – Tips & Tricks!

Alright, so I decided to get one of those “inside helmet camera” setups. You know, the kind that shows your point of view while riding. I figured it’d be cool for sharing rides and maybe even for safety, like a dashcam but for my bike.

First thing I did was, obviously, grab a camera. I already own a sports camera, so I just used that one for test and record.

Then comes the tricky part – how to actually mount this thing inside my helmet. I’m not the most handy person, so I was dreading drilling holes or anything permanent. I’d be screwed if I messed it up!

My Mounting Experiments

  • Attempt 1: The Chin Strap Mount. I found some mounts designed to attach to the chin strap. Sounded perfect, right? Wrong! It was super uncomfortable, pressing right against my chin, and the camera angle was way off. It was basically recording my neck.
  • Attempt 2: The “Stick-On” Method. I got some of those heavy-duty adhesive pads, the ones that claim they can hold anything. I stuck one to the inside of my helmet, right above my forehead, and attached the camera. It… held. For about five minutes. Then, thunk, the whole thing fell off and smacked me in the face. Good times.
  • Attempt 3: The “Stuff It In There” Method. This was pure desperation. I tried wedging the camera between the helmet’s padding and my forehead. Shockingly, it kind of worked! The angle was decent, and it felt surprisingly secure. But it was also super uncomfortable, like having a brick strapped to my head. Plus, I was pretty sure it would compromise the helmet’s safety in a crash.

Finding a Solution (Sort Of)

After all these failed attempts,I went back to the drawing board, did some more online digging, and found a few more specialized mounts. These were designed to fit inside the helmet’s vent holes.

I ordered one, and it was a definite improvement. It clipped into the vent above my forehead, holding the camera much more securely than my “stuff it” method. The angle was better, too, giving a pretty good view of the road ahead.

It’s still not perfect. The camera sticks out a bit, which looks kind of goofy, and I worry about it catching on something. And, honestly, I’m still not 100% convinced it’s the safest setup. But for now, it’s the best I’ve managed to come up with.

I guess you could say I’m still experimenting.
