Okay, so today I decided to mess around with creating a character named “Ken Wong”. I’ve had this idea bouncing around in my head for a while, and I figured, why not just start? No fancy tools, just getting the basics down.

Getting Started

First, I grabbed a pencil and some paper. Yeah, I’m old school like that. I like the feel of pencil on paper, it helps me think. I started with some really rough sketches, just trying to get a feel for Ken’s general look. Was he going to be tall and lanky? Short and stocky? I doodled a few different body types, nothing detailed, just basic shapes.

Then I thought about his face. What kind of expression did I want him to have? I tried out a few different eyes and mouths – a smirk, a serious frown, even a goofy grin. I settled on something that looked a bit determined, but with a hint of mischief.

Adding Some Details

Once I had a basic outline I liked, I started adding some details. I gave him some clothes – a simple t-shirt and jeans, nothing fancy. I figured Ken was more of a practical guy. I also started thinking about his hair. Should it be short and spiky? Long and flowing? I ended up going with something in between, kind of messy but stylish.

Trying Out Colors

After I was happy with the pencil sketch, I took a picture of it with my phone. I’m not a pro at digital art, but I wanted to play around with some colors. I opened up a free drawing app on my tablet and imported the photo. I then started experimenting with different color palettes. I tried giving him a blue shirt, then a green one, and finally settled on a reddish-brown. For his skin, I went with a warm, tanned tone.

The Final Result (For Now)

It’s definitely not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with how Ken Wong turned out, especially for a quick first try. It’s cool to see an idea go from just a thought in my head to something a little more concrete. I’m sure I’ll keep tweaking and refining him as I go, but for now, I’m calling it a win. I saved the image and now I’ve got a visual starting point for this character!
