What is a Typical Golf Score? See What Most Golfers Shoot.

Okay, so I’ve been trying to get a handle on what’s considered a “typical” golf score, and man, it’s a rabbit hole! I started this whole thing thinking I could just find a simple number, but it turns out to be way more complicated.

First, I dug around online, you know, the usual Google search. I found tons of articles and forum posts, but they were all throwing around different numbers. Some said 90 was average, others said 100, and some even went higher. It was a mess!

Then, I started asking my friends who play golf. Some of them are pretty good, shooting in the 80s consistently. Others, well, let’s just say they spend more time in the rough than on the fairway. Their scores were all over the place, from the low 80s to well over 110.

I even went down to the local golf course and just watched people play for a while. I didn’t keep exact scores, but I tried to get a general sense of how people were doing. I saw some really impressive shots, and I saw some… not-so-impressive shots. It was a real mix.

After all of this, I realized there’s no single “typical” golf score. I changed my mind from the begining. It totally depends on a bunch of things:

  • Skill level: Obviously, beginners are going to score higher than experienced players.
  • Course difficulty: Some courses are just plain harder than others. More hazards, longer holes, trickier greens – all of that adds strokes.
  • Weather conditions: Wind, rain, even extreme heat can make it harder to play your best.
  • Even a player’s mood.

So, instead of finding one magic number, I have a better understanding of the range of typical scores. For a casual golfer, who plays occasionally and doesn’t take it too seriously, I’d say anything between 90 and 110 is pretty typical. More experienced players, who practice regularly and play on tougher courses, might shoot in the 80s or even lower. But, those high-level scores are not the “typical”.

Honestly, I think the most important thing is just to have fun and enjoy the game. I am trying my best to enjoy it right now!
