Alright, so I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and today I finally got around to it. I wanted to really dig into some old footage of Tracy McGrady and Kobe Bryant, just to appreciate their games and see what I could pick up, you know?
Getting Started
First thing I did was fire up the computer. Gotta have the right tools for the job, right? I knew I was gonna be spending some time on this, so I made sure I had some water and a comfy chair.
Then I had to find the games. This took a little bit longer. I spent some time digging, but eventually, I found some good quality full games and highlights.
The Deep Dive
Once I had the videos, I started watching. And I mean really watching. I wasn’t just passively viewing; I was pausing, rewinding, and taking notes.
- Kobe’s Footwork: I noticed, time after time his footwork was unreal. The way he would pivot, jab step, and create space was just art. I tried to mimic some of his moves in my living room – definitely tripped over the rug a couple of times, haha!
- T-Mac’s Smoothness: Then there was T-Mac. Everything he did looked so effortless. His jump shot was pure, and the way he could glide to the basket… I spent a good chunk of time just replaying his highlights, trying to absorb that smoothness.
- Their One-on-One Battles: I found some clips of them guarding each other, and man, those were intense! You could see the respect they had for each other, but also the competitive fire. I was focused on how they tried to exploit each other’s weaknesses – it was like a chess match.
Trying It Out (and Failing a Bit)
After a few hours of watching, I felt inspired. I grabbed my basketball and headed out to my driveway. I tried to put some of what I’d seen into practice. Let’s just say, it’s a lot harder than it looks! My “Kobe fadeaway” ended up being more of an “airball stumble,” and my attempt at T-Mac’s pull-up jumper was… well, let’s just say it needed work.
Wrapping Up
Even though I couldn’t magically become Kobe or T-Mac, it was still super valuable. Seeing how those guys approached the game, their dedication to the fundamentals, and their competitive spirit – that’s something anyone can learn from.

I took some mental notes, and some actual notes, feeling pretty good about the session. I would do it again next time.
I ended the day feeling pretty good. It was a fun way to spend a few hours, and I definitely felt like I learned something. Plus, it’s always good to get a reminder of just how amazing those two players were.
