Okay, so my motorcycle wouldn’t start the other day. Dead battery, classic, right? I didn’t have a motorcycle charger, but I did have my car and some jumper cables. I’d heard you could jump-start a motorcycle from a car, but I was a little nervous about frying something. So, this is how I did it, step by step, and it worked like a charm!

Getting Everything Ready
First, I gathered my stuff. I needed:
- My car (obviously!)
- My motorcycle with the dead battery
- Jumper cables
I made sure both the car and motorcycle were parked close enough for the cables to reach, but not touching. This is important!
Connecting the Cables – The Scary Part (but not really)
This is where I was extra careful. I turned off both the car and the motorcycle. You don’t want the car running during this!
- I connected the red (positive +) cable to the positive terminal of my motorcycle battery. It’s usually marked with a plus sign and might have a red cover.
- Then, I connected the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of my car battery. Same deal – look for the plus sign.
- Next, I connected the black (negative -) cable to the negative terminal of my car battery.
- This is the crucial part: I DID NOT connect the other end of the black cable directly to the motorcycle battery. Instead, I found a good, unpainted metal part of the motorcycle’s frame and connected the black cable there. This is to avoid any sparks near the battery, which can be dangerous.
Jump-Starting the Motorcycle
With all the cables connected, I waited a moment, turned on the car ignition let the car idle, and then I tried to start the car for a couple of minutes, don’t rev it up or anything, just let it idle. Then I tried starting my motorcycle. And…VROOM! It started right up!
Disconnecting – Reverse Order!
Once the motorcycle was running, I carefully disconnected the cables in the reverse order I connected them:

- I removed the black cable from the motorcycle frame.
- Then, the black cable from the car battery.
- Next, the red cable from the car battery.
- Finally, the red cable from the motorcycle battery.
I let my motorcycle run for a while to make sure the battery got a good charge. And that was it! I was back on the road.
Just be sure to connect the black cable to the frame of the dead motorcycle, and connect the cable with the order.
