So, I got this idea stuck in my head – I wanted to mess around with some good old 1980s Renault cars, virtually, of course. I’m no mechanic, but I love the look of those boxy classics!

First thing I did was, hit up the search engines. I just started typing in stuff like “1980s Renault models,” “Renault 80s specs,” anything that came to mind. I needed a good overview of what I was getting myself into.

Then I scoured those fan pages and forums. I mean, really went deep. The folks on those sites are hard core! It’s like a whole different world, with nicknames for all of the cars. I took notes on, the most common models, I saw pop up, like the Renault 5 (both the regular and the Turbo, of course!), the Renault 18, and even the Renault 25.

Digging into the Details

Once I had my list, it was time to get specific. I wanted details, I began with the Renault 5. I was all over image searches, grabbing pictures from every angle. I even tried to find old brochures and advertisements. The key was getting a feel for the shapes, the lines, all the little things that make an 80s Renault a Renault.

  • Year by Year:I broke down the search by specific years, like “1984 Renault 5” to see if there were any small changes to the body or trim.
  • Trim Levels: Found out about these things called “trim levels” – basically, different versions of the same car with different features. Who knew?
  • Engine Options:Learned that you could get these cars with all sorts of engines, from tiny little things to surprisingly powerful ones (especially in the Turbo models!).

I went through this same process for the other cars on my list, too. The Renault 18, with its slightly more angular look, and the Renault 25, which seemed way more luxurious than the others. The hunt for information was almost as much fun as imagining what I would do, with all of this information.

I keep all my notes and images, organized in folders on my computer. It’s kind of, like my own personal digital archive of 1980s Renault goodness. I plan to build a virtual version of each car that I have selected, sometime in the near future.
