Okay, so I wanted to get better at drawing, and I figured a soccer ball would be a good challenge. It’s not just a simple sphere, right? It’s got all those panels. Here’s how I went about it.

Starting with the Basics
First, I drew a circle. Just a regular, freehand circle. Didn’t stress too much about making it perfect, because, let’s be honest, my freehand circles are never perfect.
Adding the Pentagons
- Next, I tried to draw a pentagon in the center. Five sides, you know? This was tougher than I thought. It took a few tries to get it looking somewhat decent.
- Then, I drew lines extending out from each point of the pentagon. These lines went all the way to the edge of the circle I drew earlier.
Filling in the Hexagons
Now, around that central pentagon, I started drawing hexagons. Six-sided shapes. I noticed that each pentagon is surrounded by hexagons, so that’s what I did. Again, not perfect, but I was getting the general idea.
- It helped to think of it like building a little puzzle. Each hexagon shares sides with other hexagons and the pentagons.
- I just kept adding hexagons and pentagons, working my way out from the center, until the whole circle was filled.
Refining and Shading
Once I had all the panels drawn, I went back and darkened some of the lines to make the shapes stand out more. I also erased some of the lines that were, lets just say, less than stellar. I used some references to know where the shades are and drew it.
And that’s it! It’s definitely not perfect, but it looks like a soccer ball. Practice makes perfect, I will continue to practice!
