Okay, so I got this idea the other day to look up all the winning jockeys from the Kentucky Derby. I mean, those guys are legends, right? So I figured, why not compile a list and see what I can find out about them?
First off, I started by hitting up the official Kentucky Derby website. They’ve got a pretty comprehensive list of all the past winners, going way back. I started copying down the names of the jockeys, year by year. It was a bit tedious, but I just plugged in some music and got to it. I figured I’d start with the most recent winners and work my way backwards. After I had a decent list going, I thought, “Okay, now what?”
Next, I decided to look up each jockey individually. I used some regular search engines, nothing fancy. Mostly I was looking for some basic info, like where they were from, how many other big races they’d won, and any interesting stories about them. Let me tell you, some of these jockeys have some wild stories. I’m talking about overcoming crazy odds, making dramatic comebacks, and just generally being all-around awesome athletes.
- I found some interviews with a few of the jockeys, which was pretty cool. It’s always interesting to hear about their experiences firsthand.
- I learned about their training regimens,, which are totally insane. These guys are in incredible shape, it’s really impressive.
- I even stumbled across some old photos and videos of past races. It’s amazing to see how much the sport has changed over the years. And how little it’s changed at the same time.
After a few days of digging around, I had a pretty solid collection of information. I put it all in a document. I feel like I know these guys a little bit better now, or at least who they were. It made me appreciate the Kentucky Derby even more, knowing the history and the stories behind all those winning jockeys.
This whole thing was way more work than I initially thought it would be, but it was also way more rewarding. I might even turn this into a bigger project sometime, who knows? Maybe I’ll make a whole website dedicated to these legendary jockeys. The possibilities are endless!
