You won’t believe the day I had, folks. It all started this morning when I decided to dive into the story of Dikembe Mutombo. Man, what a legend! So, I kicked things off by hitting up Google, just typing in “Dikembe Mutombo” to see what’s up.
First thing that popped up was the news about his passing. Damn, that hit me hard. Apparently, he died on September 30, 2024, from brain cancer. It’s crazy, right? He was 58. I kept digging, found out that his family announced back in 2022 that he was getting treated for a brain tumor. It’s always tough to hear stuff like that.
I spent a good chunk of the day going through articles and old interviews. It’s wild to think about all the things he did, both on and off the court. I mean, the guy was a defensive beast! Four-time Defensive Player of the Year! And that finger wag, iconic.
Here’s what I did to really get into it:
- Watched a ton of his old games on YouTube. Man, could that guy block shots!
- Read through a bunch of articles about his life, his career, and his humanitarian work. The dude was a legend.
- Checked out some interviews with people who knew him. Found one where Kuminga talked about meeting him. Said Mutombo told him to “keep working” and “remember where you come from.” Gives you chills, right?
What I did:
I started saving all these articles and videos. Made a whole folder just for Mutombo stuff. Then I got to writing. I wanted to put together a tribute, something that really captured what he meant to the game and to people around the world.
Honestly, I lost track of time. I was so engrossed in learning about Mutombo and his impact. It’s moments like these that make you appreciate life, you know? We lost a real one today. Rest in peace, Dikembe Mutombo. You will be missed, big guy.

I’ll be sharing my full tribute piece soon. Stay tuned.
