EPL Home and Away Table: Easy Tips for Beginners

Alright, today I wanna talk about how I built a little tool to keep track of the English Premier League, but with a twist – separate tables for home and away matches. You know, sometimes a team plays like a beast at home but kinda sucks when they’re away. So, I thought, why not see those performances separately?

First thing I did was to find out how the Premier League actually works. Turns out, there are 20 teams, and each one plays 38 games in a season – 19 at their home ground and 19 away. And if teams end up with the same points, it gets messy. They look at goal differences, goals scored, head-to-head results, and even away goals in those head-to-heads.

So, I got down to work. Started by gathering all the match results. Now, this took some time, going through each game, noting down who played who, where they played, and the scores. I had to be careful here, making sure I didn’t mix up the home and away teams. It’s easy to mess up, trust me.

Once I had all the data, I started building the tables. For the home table, I only counted games played at a team’s home ground. Wins, losses, draws, goals for, goals against, goal difference, points – the usual stuff. I did the same for the away table, but this time only counting games played away from home.

I used a simple spreadsheet to put it all together, nothing fancy. You can use whatever software you like, though. One column for the team, then separate columns for games played, won, drawn, lost, goals for, goals against, goal difference, and points. I used some basic formulas to calculate the goal difference and points.

Here are some of my key takeaways:

  • Pay attention to the details. Making sure I got the home and away teams right was crucial. A small mistake could mess up the whole table.

  • Double-check everything. I went through the data multiple times, just to make sure I hadn’t made any errors.

  • Keep it simple. I didn’t need any fancy software or complicated formulas. A simple spreadsheet and basic math did the job.

After putting it all together, it was pretty cool to see the differences. Some teams were like kings in their own castles but totally different when playing away. It really gives you a different perspective on the teams’ performances.

Oh, and I also found out that some dude named Mohamed Salah scored the most away goals this season. Good for him, I guess.

It was a fun little project, and now I have these cool separate tables to see how teams really perform at home versus away. If you’re a football nut like me, give it a try. It’s a bit of work, but totally worth it. You might be surprised by what you find!
