Then, things got a bit dramatic. Apparently, the owner of the team didn’t renew the contract of their manager, Cap Anson, in 1898. Big change! And because of that, a sportswriter, Fred A. Hayner, started calling them the “Cubs” in the Chicago Daily News. The article was from March 27, 1902. I even found the exact quote he wrote, it says: “Frank Selee will devote his strongest efforts on the team work of the new Cubs this year.”
So, I kept reading and learned more about how this name stuck. I discovered that in 1902, because the team was super young, they were already being referred to as “Cubs” by the press. And it wasn’t just that one article, either. This nickname started showing up more and more. It makes sense, really – short, catchy, and it fit the team’s image at the time.
Then I thought, “What about Wrigley Field?” You know, the Cubs’ famous stadium? It turns out that got its name much later, in 1926. It was named after William Wrigley Jr., who owned the team. That’s a nice little tribute, don’t you think?
