Okay, so today I decided to check out St. Matthias Church in Budapest. I’d seen pictures, of course, but nothing beats seeing something like this in person. First thing I did was hop on the metro – super easy to get around Budapest that way. I got off at the Széll Kálmán tér station and, boom, there it was, this huge, impressive church right in front of me.

Getting There and First Impressions
I walked around the outside for a bit, just taking it all in. The roof is what really caught my eye first – all those colorful tiles! It’s like a giant, intricate mosaic. Seriously, the roof is wild. It’s all these bright colors, and the patterns are amazing.
Exploring the Inside
Then I went inside. It cost a little bit to get in, but it was totally worth it. Inside, it’s just as impressive, if not more so. I’m not a religious person, really, but you can’t help but feel a sense of awe in a place like this. Every inch of the walls and ceiling is covered in these detailed frescoes and paintings. I spent ages just looking up!
- The stained-glass windows were beautiful.
- The sheer size of the place is incredible.
- So. Much. Gold. Seriously, gold everywhere.
Taking it all in
I wandered around, checking out the different chapels and altars. There were a few other tourists, but it wasn’t overly crowded, which was nice. I even lit a candle – just felt like the thing to do. I found a quiet spot and sat down for a while, just soaking it all in. It’s one of those places that makes you feel really small, you know? In a good way.
Final Thoughts
After a couple of hours, I headed back outside. I grabbed a coffee from a nearby cafe and sat on a bench, just looking at the church again. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful buildings I’ve ever seen. If you’re ever in Budapest, you absolutely have to check it out. You won’t regret it.
