Feet In The Golf Swing: The Secret to a Better Game! (Simple Tips for Every Golfer)

Today, I tried something new with my golf swing, and it was all about the feet. I’ve always heard people say golf is all in the hips, but my feet? That’s new territory for me.

So, I started by just standing there, trying to get a feel for how my feet were planted. I wiggled my toes, shifted my weight from one foot to the other, you know, the basic stuff. I realized I usually just stand there without much thought. But today, I was determined to pay attention.

I tried a few practice swings, focusing on keeping my feet stable. It felt weird at first, like I was too rigid. But then I started to loosen up a bit, letting my feet move naturally with my body. It was a small change, but I could feel a difference in my balance.

Getting the Stance Right

  • Stable Base: I made sure my feet were about shoulder-width apart. Too narrow, and I felt like I’d tip over. Too wide, and it was hard to shift my weight.
  • Weight Distribution: This was key. I focused on keeping my weight evenly distributed between both feet. Not leaning too much on my heels or toes.
  • Slight Bend: I bent my knees just a little. Not a full squat, just enough to feel engaged.

Then came the real test: actually hitting the ball. I took my stance, focused on my feet, and swung. I messed up a few times, of course, my feet weren’t used to be part of it. Either my feet stayed too still, making my swing stiff, or they moved too much, throwing off my aim. There were a couple of shanks and a few that went way off to the right. But I kept at it, trying to find that sweet spot where my feet worked with the rest of my body.

After a bunch of tries, I started to get the hang of it. My feet were moving, but not too much. I could feel my weight shifting from my back foot to my front foot as I swung. And you know what? My shots started going straighter and farther. It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely an improvement.

I spent a good hour just hitting balls, focusing on my feet with each swing. I noticed that when I got my feet right, my whole body seemed to move better. My hips turned more easily, my shoulders followed through, and the club just seemed to flow. It was like my feet were the foundation for everything else.

By the end of the session, I was actually hitting the ball pretty well. I wouldn’t say I’m ready for the pro tour or anything, but I definitely felt a difference. My swing felt more powerful, more controlled, and just more natural. All because I paid attention to my feet.

So, that’s my little experiment with feet in the golf swing. It’s not something I ever really thought about before, but now I’m convinced it makes a big difference. I’m going to keep working on it, trying to make it a natural part of my game. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll actually be good at this golf thing.
