Okay, so I’ve been getting into restoring old tools lately. It’s kinda therapeutic, you know? Taking something rusty and forgotten and giving it a new life. My latest project? A vintage double-sided hand saw. I found this bad boy at a flea market – totally covered in rust, handle all cracked, but I saw the potential.

Getting Started
First thing’s first, I took a bunch of “before” pictures. Gotta document the journey, right? Then, I disassembled the saw. This one had screws holding the handle on, which was pretty easy to deal with. Some older saws have these split-nut bolts, which can be a real pain.
Rust Removal
Next up: rust removal. This is where the magic happens. There are a few ways to do this, but I’m a big fan of using vinegar. I submerged the saw blade in a bath of white vinegar. Make sure the blade is fully covered. I left it to soak for about 24 hours. You could see the rust starting to loosen up after just a few hours.
- Tip: If you’ve got a really big saw, you might need a long, shallow container. A plastic storage bin works great.
Scrub-a-Dub-Dub
After the vinegar soak, I took the blade out and gave it a good scrubbing. I used a wire brush and some steel wool. It’s kinda messy, but so satisfying to see that rust come off. You might need to repeat the vinegar soak and scrubbing a couple of times, depending on how rusty your saw is. Don’t rush it! Patience is key.
Handle With Care
While the blade was soaking, I turned my attention to the handle. This one was pretty beat up, with some deep cracks. First, I cleaned it up as the same way as the blade. Then I applied it to dry. Then, I use sandpapers to polish it.
- Tip: Wrap sandpaper around a dowel or a piece of wood to get into those curved areas.
After I finished it, I applied a couple of coats of oil. Let it dry completely between coats.

Putting It All Back Together
Once the blade was rust-free and the handle was refinished, it was time to put everything back together. I carefully aligned the handle and tightened the screws. Don’t over-tighten them, or you could crack the handle.
The Final Result
And there you have it! A beautifully restored vintage double-sided hand saw. It’s amazing what a little elbow grease and some patience can do. Now, this saw isn’t just a tool; it’s a piece of history that I brought back to life. And it’s actually usable again! I already tried it out on some scrap wood, and it cuts like a dream.
Hope you enjoyed following along on this little restoration project. Let me know if you’ve got any old tools you’re thinking about bringing back to life!
