So last month I finally made it to Sturgis Rally, something I’d been dreaming about for ages. Man, let me tell you, just getting there felt like half the battle. Figured I’d write down exactly how I pulled it off, especially the arrival and parking nightmare everyone warned me about.

Leaving Home – Thought I Was Smart
Jumped in my truck around 4 AM sharp Tuesday morning. Coffee thermos full, cooler packed tight. Thought sneaking out early would beat the crowds. Total rookie move. Lesson one: Everybody else has this idea too. By the time I hit Wyoming, it was already feeling like rush hour. Miles of bikes and trucks and campers, just crawling. That “easy arrival” dream? Poof.
The Highway Crawl
Interstate 90 heading toward South Dakota turned into one long, rolling party. Awesome sights, sure, but man, the speed! Felt like I was stuck behind everyone. Took me forever just to get near Rapid City. Stop-and-go traffic for miles. People hanging out windows talking, music blasting, but man, my butt was numb. Should’ve planned way more buffer time. The rally vibe starts early, right on the highway.
Hitting Sturgis Town Limits – Chaos Central
Got off the interstate expecting smooth sailing. Nope. That final stretch? Gridlock. Every road leading into Sturgis was jammed. Crawled past the “Welcome” sign feeling more stressed than welcome. The official main event parking I scoped online? Forget it. Signs flashing “FULL” by mid-morning Tuesday. Major bummer. Panic started setting in. Where the heck was I gonna stash my beast? Circled around forever, wasting gas and daylight.
The Parking Miracle (Sort Of)
Just as I was debating driving back to Rapid City, I saw it. An old guy on a folding chair at the edge of a huge, dusty field just outside the main chaos. Handmade sign: “$40 Parking All Week.” Didn’t look like much, mostly dirt and gravel. But space? Oh yeah. Pulled right in. Felt like winning the lottery. Paying cash to a guy named Earl felt sketchy, but hey, spot secured. It was a long walk into the action, maybe 20 minutes. Lesson two: Drive the perimeter streets, look for locals renting their land. Earl saved my bacon.
The Main Event & Getting Back
The Rally itself? Wild. Soaked it all in. But when it was time to leave Sunday, oh boy. Remembered exactly where Earl’s place was – bonus! Truck was dusty but untouched. Getting out was actually easier than getting in, but you still gotta be patient leaving town. Packed snacks for the road this time. No dumb empty stomach mistakes.

What I Learned The Hard Way
- Super Early Means Still Late: If you wanna snag official parking or an easy drive, leave a day earlier than “early.” Tuesday felt like peak arrival.
- Official Parking Is A Myth: Assume it’ll be full. Scout private lots further out BEFORE you get trapped in town traffic. Earl’s spot was gold.
- Cash Is King: Those off-site guys ain’t taking Venmo. Have small bills ready.
- Pack Patience (& Snacks): The traffic grind is real. Bring water, food, tunes, and just accept it. Getting mad won’t move anything.
- Mark Your Spot: That dusty field looked the same as a dozen others. Remember landmarks near your parking spot!
So yeah, getting to Sturgis “easy”? Nope. Getting there possible? Absolutely. Just gotta be ready for the crazy, pay Earl his cash, and lace up your walkin’ boots. Worth every dusty mile and penny.
