Alright, let’s talk about my little adventure with the billy birch bookcase. It all started ’cause the living room was just a mess, books and bits piling up everywhere. Needed some proper storage, you know? Something simple, cheap, and not too ugly. So, off I went, braving the weekend crowds.

Getting Started
Found the flatpack easily enough, the classic billy in that birch effect. Looked straightforward on the display. Lugged the heavy box back home. Unpacking it felt like step one already. Laid out all the pieces on the floor, checked the list. Seemed okay. Then came the instructions – mostly pictures, hardly any words. Always makes me a bit nervous, feels like they assume you’re a mind reader.
So, I grabbed my trusty screwdriver, the hammer they always say you need. Started putting the sides together with the top and bottom pieces. Those little wooden dowels went in easy enough. But then came the cam locks, those twisty things. Some went fine, others felt a bit fiddly. Had to really make sure they locked tight, otherwise the whole thing would wobble.
The Tricky Part
Putting the shelves in was simple, just slotting the pins in the holes. The real fun, or maybe frustration, started with the back panel. That flimsy cardboard thing you gotta nail on. They give you a ton of tiny nails. Trying to get it perfectly square so the whole bookcase doesn’t end up crooked… well, that took some patience. Hammering those tiny nails without hitting my thumb or damaging the edge of the wood? Yeah, that required focus. I might have slightly misaligned one corner, but shhh.
- Laying out all parts first is key.
- Take your time with the cam locks.
- Squaring up the back panel is crucial, don’t rush it.
All Done (Mostly)
Finally got the back panel secured. Stood the whole thing up. It felt… surprisingly sturdy, actually. For a flatpack job, not bad. Slid it into place against the wall. Looks pretty decent, does the job holding all my junk, I mean, treasured books and stuff. The birch effect is alright, blends in okay.
So yeah, the billy birch project. It wasn’t exactly rocket science, but it took a bit of effort, a few muttered curses under my breath, especially with that back panel. But hey, I did it myself, saved some cash compared to pre-assembled stuff, and the living room looks way tidier. Practical win, I’d say. Would I do it again? Probably, yeah. It’s just one of those things.
