Alright, so let me tell you about this San Diego golf tournament I went to recently. Wasn’t playing, thank goodness – my game’s not quite there yet, maybe never will be! Just went to watch, soak it all in.

Decided kinda last minute, really. Saw it was happening, weather looked decent, figured why not. Woke up earlier than I wanted to on a Saturday, grabbed my old hat, slapped on some sunscreen – you know the drill living here. Getting there was, well, exactly what you’d expect. Traffic wasn’t terrible, but finding parking? That took some patience. Ended up quite a walk away, but hey, legs still work.
Getting Onto the Course
Finally got through the gates. It’s always a bit of a rush, that feeling when you first step onto the course during a big event. The grass looks impossibly green, way better than my patchy lawn, that’s for sure. Crowds were already pretty thick, especially around the big names. I tried to follow one group for a bit, but honestly, it was a pain. You’re constantly trying to peek over shoulders, moving when they move. Gave up on that pretty quick.
So, I just started wandering. That turned out to be way better. Found myself a spot near one of the greens on the back nine. Less crowded, could actually see the shots coming in. Watched a few groups come through. It’s wild seeing these guys up close. The sound the ball makes off the clubface? Totally different than when I whack it.
Things I noticed:
- The sheer quiet when they’re about to hit. Thousands of people, dead silent. Kinda cool.
- How fast they walk. These guys aren’t strolling; they’re moving with purpose.
- The price of a bottle of water. Ouch. Packed my own snacks, thankfully.
The Vibe and Heading Home
Spent a good few hours out there. Walked way more than I thought I would. Saw some amazing shots, saw some absolute shockers that made me feel a bit better about my own game. Mostly, it was just nice being outside, feeling the buzz. People were generally pretty chill, lots of golf fans just enjoying the day.

Started heading back towards the exit mid-afternoon. Feet were definitely feeling it by then. The walk back to the car felt even longer. Got home, kicked off my shoes, and pretty much just collapsed on the couch. Was it worth the hassle of the crowds and the parking? Yeah, I think so. It’s a different world inside those ropes. Good reminder of how incredible these athletes are, and a decent way to spend a sunny San Diego day, even if it costs you an arm and a leg for a drink.
