How Much Do Thoroughbred Horses Cost? (Beginners Buying Guide)

Okay, so I got curious the other day about how much those fancy Thoroughbred horses cost. You know, the ones that race in the big leagues. I’ve always watched those races and thought, “Man, those owners must be loaded!” So, I decided to do some digging, and here’s what I found out.

My Little Research Project

First, I went online to a couple of general websites. Just wanted to get a ballpark figure, you know? It turns out it’s a pretty wide range. I used to think that there are some really accurate sites, but I found that many of them gave me a different price range, which made me not know which data I should refer to.

What I mostly found was that your average Thoroughbred is gonna set you back anywhere from $50,000 to $300,000. Seriously! That’s like a house, or maybe several really nice cars, and I’ve been working hard for a few years and I can’t afford it.

The Insane Prices

  • Then, I started searching for the expensive ones. It turns out I learned about the highest price tag.

  • I found out about this horse named Fusaichi Pegasus. I remember that name! He sold for, get this, nearly $70 million! It gave me such a shock.

  • I mean, I knew these horses were expensive, but $70 million? That’s insane! That’s beyond my imagination, I could never have imagined that.

Putting it All Together

So after I searched them and found out the price, I just organized them in my notebook.

I wrote down the range, from the average ones to that crazy expensive record-holder. It helped me get a much better idea of the whole price landscape. Now, I am not saying that I could become an expert to analyse the price, I just searched and wrote down my findings, hope this helps you.

Anyway, that was my little adventure into the world of Thoroughbred horse prices. It’s a crazy world, and I’m definitely not buying one anytime soon, but it was fun to learn about!
