How to Know if Your Golf Clubs Are the Right Size.

Okay, so I’ve been getting back into golf lately, and something felt off. My shots were inconsistent, and I was bending over way too much. It got me thinking, “Are my clubs too short?” So, I dove into figuring this out, and here’s what I did:

How to Know if Your Golf Clubs Are the Right Size.

The “Wrist-to-Floor” Measurement

First, I tried the basic wrist-to-floor measurement thing. I stood straight, relaxed my arms, and got my wife to measure from my wrist crease to the floor.

  • Stood up super straight, like my grandma always told me.
  • Arms hanging loose, no tension.
  • Had my wife measure the whole setup. It took a few time, and got the average.

The “Static Fitting”

This one felt a bit more involved, but it was helpful to do.

  • I grabbed a 6-iron(cause I saw that some people used that, so I just follow along).
  • Got into my normal stance, like I was about to whack the ball.
  • Checked where the clubhead was sitting. I try to keep it perfectly in the center of the club.
  • If the toe was pointing up? Maybe the clubs are too short. Heel digging in? Clubs might be fine or on the long side.

Hitting Some Balls (The Fun Part!)

Measuring is okay, but nothing beats actually hitting some balls. So, I went to the driving range and start hitting.

  • I started with my wedges and short irons.
  • I focused on how I was standing. Was I hunched over like a question mark? That’s a bad sign.
  • I watched where my shots were going. Lots of pulls or slices? Could be the clubs, could be my terrible swing, but it’s worth noting.
  • I paid attention to any pain. Lower back pain could mean I’m bending too much because the clubs are short.
  • I switched up irons, going from shorter to longer ones, to see if there was a difference in how I felt and how the ball flew.

Listen to My Body

After all that, the most important thing I did was to check if my body was alright.

  • Am I in my posture comfortably, or I feel like a human pretzel?
  • Am I swing smoothly, or am I straining and twisting?

I realized my clubs were a bit short. My back was killing me after just a few swings, and I was definitely hunched over. I think I’ll ask my friend to give me his longer clubs, and see how those feel.

It’s all about trial and error, and paying attention to what your body is telling you. No single measurement is perfect. Just get out there, try it, and make some adjustments!
