Trying Out the Backwards Cap Thing
Alright, so I kept seeing folks, mostly younger guys, walking around with their baseball caps on backwards. Always struck me as a bit odd, you know? Like, the brim’s there for a reason, right? Keep the sun out of your eyes. But hey, who am I to judge? Decided I had to give it a proper go myself, just to see what the fuss was about, or if I was missing something.

So, one Saturday, I was just kicking around the house, getting ready to do some yard work. Grabbed my trusty old blue cap, the one I always wear. Usually, I just slap it on, brim forward, standard procedure. But this time, I stopped. Thought about it. Okay, let’s do this. I took the cap, spun it around 180 degrees, and put it on my head, brim facing back.
First impressions? Felt weird. Real weird. The back of my neck felt the brim, which was a new sensation. The adjustable strap was now on my forehead, which wasn’t exactly uncomfortable, but definitely noticeable. My forehead felt… exposed. Used to having that shade.
I went over to the mirror to check it out. Looked kinda like I was trying too hard, if I’m being honest. Maybe it works for some people, gives off that casual, don’t-care vibe. On me? Felt a bit like I’d forgotten how to wear a hat properly. Still, I committed. I was going to wear it like this for a bit.
Went outside. Sun was pretty bright. Immediately missed the brim over my eyes. Had to squint a lot more. That was a definite downside. On the plus side, when I leaned down to pull some weeds, the brim wasn’t digging into the dirt or getting knocked off by branches, which sometimes happens. So, maybe there’s a practical angle in certain situations? Like if you’re working close up on something or need to look upwards a lot without the brim blocking your view.
- Felt strange on the head initially.
- Looked a bit awkward on me (personal opinion).
- No sun protection for the face is a major drawback.
- Might be practical for specific tasks where the brim gets in the way.
- Kept my hair off my neck, I guess?
After about an hour, I switched it back around. Ah, sweet relief. Eyes relaxed, felt normal again. So, my conclusion? Wearing a cap backwards… it’s mostly a style choice, I reckon. It has very limited practical upside for me, mainly cancelling out the hat’s primary function. Maybe if you’re a catcher in baseball, sure. Or if you really need to avoid knocking the brim off. But for everyday wear? Nah, I’ll stick to the traditional way. Felt like I did my research, gave it a fair shot. Just wasn’t for me.
