Alright, let me tell you about my KTM 500 EXC-F HP project. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell ya!

So, it all started when I picked up a used KTM 500 EXC-F. Great bike, don’t get me wrong, but I felt like it was missing something. You know, that extra oomph. I wanted more horsepower, plain and simple.
First thing I did was dive into the engine. I pulled the head and checked everything out. Looked pretty good, but I wanted to make it better. I decided to go with a high-compression piston. Figured that would give me a good boost. I went with a reputable brand, did my research and all that jazz. Getting that piston in was a bit of a pain, had to be careful with the rings and all.
Next up was the exhaust. The stock exhaust was choking the engine, I just knew it. I swapped it out for a full aftermarket system. Went with one that had good reviews and wasn’t too crazy loud. Bolting that on was pretty straightforward, thankfully.
Then came the fuel injection. With the new piston and exhaust, the stock fuel map was definitely off. I grabbed a fuel tuner and started messing with the settings. This was the tricky part. I spent hours tweaking the fuel map, riding the bike, and tweaking it some more. It was a lot of trial and error, but eventually I got it dialed in pretty well. You could feel the difference immediately. The throttle response was way sharper, and the bike pulled harder in every gear.
After that, I focused on the intake. I installed a high-flow air filter and modified the airbox a little bit to let more air in. Nothing too drastic, just a little bit of opening up.

Now, all these mods together made a HUGE difference. The bike was a beast. It had way more power than it did stock, and it was a lot more fun to ride. But it wasn’t perfect. It ran a little hot, so I decided to upgrade the radiator. Swapped it out for a bigger one, and that helped a lot.
Finally, I got the chance to take it out on some proper trails. And man, it was awesome. The extra horsepower made climbing hills a breeze, and the improved throttle response made it a lot easier to control the bike in technical sections.
Was it worth it? Absolutely. It took some time and effort, but in the end, I got exactly what I wanted: a KTM 500 EXC-F with some serious horsepower.
Parts List (Roughly):
- High-Compression Piston
- Full Exhaust System
- Fuel Tuner
- High-Flow Air Filter
- Upgraded Radiator
It was a long process, but I learned a lot along the way. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, do your research, take your time, and don’t be afraid to experiment. You might just end up with a bike that’s even better than you imagined.
