Getting Started With Lexi’s Gear
First thing I did this morning was drag all my golf clubs into the garage. Saw Lexi Thompson’s WITB (What’s In The Bag) video yesterday and thought “man, I gotta try copying her setup”. Grabbed my notebook, pulled up her specs on my phone, and just started comparing.

The Driver Drama
Lexi games a 10.5° driver, but mine’s 9.5°. Thought “how different could it be?” Wrong. First ten swings felt like hitting rocks. Adjusted the loft sleeve higher but still couldn’t get that high launch she has. Finally swallowed my pride and drove to Golf Galaxy for a used 10.5° head.
Three things happened next:
- Duct-taped Lexi’s spec sheet to my basement wall
- Dumped my entire bag upside down on the carpet
- Started matching her club yardages with sharpie marks on my grips
Wedge Experiment Fail
Biggest headache was the wedges. Lexi plays 50°, 54°, 58°. Mine were 52° and 58°. Thought bending my 52° to 50° would work. Paid $20 at the club fitter, but after bending, the bounce got wrecked. Chunked five chips in a row at the practice green. Felt like an idiot holding that bent wedge.
Ended up ordering a used 50° wedge same model as hers. Got it yesterday. Tested against her distance chart – mine flies 110 yards when pure, just like Lexi’s. Fist-pumped so hard I spilled coffee on my notes.
Putting Like Lexi (Tried To)
Her putter’s 33.5 inches long. Mine was 35 inches. Sawed off 1.5 inches with a pipe cutter. Looked crooked as hell. Added lead tape until the swing weight felt close. Rolled putts for two hours measuring backswing length like a psycho with a yardstick.

Here’s the hilarious part: My neighbor saw me through the garage window crouching behind the putting mat with a protractor. Now he thinks I’ve gone full golf nerd.
The Final Setup Test
Played nine holes after work with the new setup. Driver launched higher but I lost two balls right. Wedges felt money between 50-100 yards. Putting? Still three-putted #7. But that one perfect 7-iron that flew Lexi’s exact 155 yards? Worth all the hassle.
Big Lesson Learned
You can’t just copy-paste a pro’s bag. What works for Lexi makes me look like a clown half the time. But dang, trying to match her specs showed me exactly where my own swing sucks. Might keep the loft adjustments but ditch the sawed-off putter. That thing looks like a crime scene.
