Alright, so I saw this phrase, “sketch what’s up brother,” and I was like, huh, I gotta try drawing that. I mean, it just sounds cool, right?
First, I grabbed my iPad and my trusty Apple Pencil. I usually use Procreate for my sketches, it’s pretty straightforward and I like the brushes.
Brainstorming Time
- “What’s up” – Okay, this part makes me think of something chill, relaxed, maybe a hand gesture.
- “Brother” – This implies some kind of friendly connection, so maybe two characters interacting?
I started with a really rough sketch. Just basic shapes, trying to figure out the pose. Initially, I pictured, one guy leaning back, super casual, with a “what’s up” hand gesture.
Then I was sketching my rough idea, the hand gesture part felt a little off. It didn’t quite capture that “brotherly” vibe. So I erased that part (thank goodness for digital art, right?) and thought about a different approach.
I decided to add another character. I drew a second stick figure, slightly smaller, looking up at the first one. This felt better – more like a conversation, a connection.
I started adding more detail.I refined the first guy, and gave him a simple T-shirt. I started drawing the second figure more clearly now, too.
I refined the hand gesture, making it more of a fist bump, halfway through the motion. That felt much more “what’s up brother” than my first attempt.
Polishing it Up
The last step was just cleaning it up. I adjusted any other parts, and just get the basic shapes to something simple.
And that was it! It wasn’t some masterpiece, but it was a fun little exercise. It’s cool to take a random phrase and just see what you can come up with. Sketch what’s up brother, indeed!
