Learning numbers for conversation? How to use 73 in Spanish properly when you are talking daily.

Alright, so today I decided to figure out how to say 73 in Spanish. Just one of those random things you wonder about sometimes, you know?

First thing, I know numbers in Spanish can be a bit tricky, especially compound ones. I had a hunch it wasn’t just smashing the two words together. I needed to break it down.

Figuring out the parts

So, I thought, okay, what are the two main parts? Seventy and three. Simple enough.

  • I went ahead and looked up “seventy”. Got setenta. Easy peasy.
  • Then, I looked up “three”. That one’s basic: tres.

Putting it together

Now, the connecting part. I remembered from learning other numbers, like thirty-one (treinta y uno), that you usually stick an ‘y’ in between when it’s a number like this, below 100. The ‘y’ basically means ‘and’.

So, I took my two parts:

Setenta (seventy)

y (and)

Tres (three)

Put them all together, and bam: setenta y tres.

Seemed logical. I double-checked a couple of examples online, just searching for how compound numbers work, and yeah, that structure looked right for 73. So, that’s my practice for the day. Just figuring out ‘setenta y tres’. It wasn’t too hard, mostly just confirming that ‘y’ was needed. Felt good to lock that one down.
