Living in Olmos Basin San Antonio TX: Is it for You?

Alright, so I finally got around to spending some time over at Olmos Basin the other weekend. Heard about it plenty, just never made the trip specifically for the park itself.

Getting there was straightforward, just punched it into the GPS and followed the route. Finding a spot to park wasn’t too bad, actually. Pulled into one of the lots near what looked like some sports fields. Seemed like a popular area, lots of cars but also lots of spaces opening up as people came and went.

Hitting the Trails

Stepped out of the car and just took it in for a second. It’s pretty big, spreads out quite a bit. You’ve got your open grassy areas, but also plenty of trees offering shade, which was nice ’cause it was getting warm.

I started off just walking, no real plan. Followed one of the paved paths that seemed to wind through the main part of the park. Saw folks doing all sorts of things:

  • Families having picnics under the trees.
  • People walking their dogs (lots of dogs!).
  • Some groups playing soccer on the fields.
  • Cyclists zipping by now and then.

It felt active, but because it’s so spread out, it didn’t feel crowded, if that makes sense. Plenty of room for everyone.

Exploring a Bit More

After a while on the pavement, I decided to wander off onto some of the dirt trails that lead into the more wooded sections. It got a bit quieter back there, more shaded. Felt more like a proper nature walk. Saw a few squirrels chasing each other up trees, heard some birds I couldn’t identify. Nothing too wild, but peaceful.

Spent a good hour or two just meandering around. Checked out the area near the dam too, that was kind of interesting to see. Didn’t do anything too strenuous, just enjoyed the fresh air and the green space. It’s a pretty decent spot right there in the city to just get away from the noise for a bit.

Eventually, I made my way back towards where I parked. Felt good to stretch the legs and just be outside. It’s a solid park, definitely a place you can spend a few hours just relaxing or getting some light exercise. Simple, easy, good way to spend part of the day.
