Okay, so here’s the deal with my little experiment trying out the off side kick. Been meaning to share this for a bit.

Getting the Idea and Just Deciding to Go For It
So, picture this: I was just lounging around, flipping through some sports clips online, as you do. And then I saw this play, an off side kick, that totally caught my eye. It wasn’t pretty, not like a booming punt, but it was clever. And I thought, “You know what? I’ve got an old football lying around and the park’s usually empty on weekday mornings. Why not give it a whirl?” Not that I’m planning a comeback career or anything, just curious to see if I could even vaguely pull it off. It’s good to try new stuff, right?
First Attempts: Pretty Much a Comedy Show
Right, so I get to the park, ball in hand. Felt a bit silly, to be honest, like a kid again, but in a good way. I set the ball down. My master plan was basically to run up like I was going to absolutely blast it, then at the last second, do… well, something else. Something that would make it go short and hopefully be recoverable by my imaginary teammates.
Let me tell you, those first few tries were hilarious. And terrible. One time, I think I missed the ball almost completely, just kind of kicked the air above it and stumbled. Looked like a total fool. Another time, I just sort of poked it, and it rolled about two feet. My dog, who decided to join me, just gave me this look, like, “Seriously, mate?” It’s definitely one of those things that looks way easier when the pros do it. Way harder than it looks on TV, that’s for sure.
Trying to Actually Learn the Technique
I vaguely remembered seeing how it’s done. The key seemed to be the approach – you gotta make it look like a normal, powerful kick. So, I focused on that first. Big, dramatic run-up. Pumping the arms, the whole shebang. Then, the tricky part: as I was about to swing through, I had to completely change what my leg was doing. Instead of a solid thump, I was trying to just kind of scrape or drag my kicking foot across the very top of the ball. Almost like a little flick or a nudge.
- Really tried to sell that big kick approach.
- Then, at the last possible moment, I’d try to lift my leg slightly and just sort of… nudge the ball.
- The aim wasn’t distance, obviously. It was about getting it to pop up weirdly, or squibble along the ground for about 10-15 yards.
Man, it felt awkward. My body just wanted to follow through with a proper kick. Fighting that natural urge was the biggest challenge. I spent a good chunk of time just working on that weird contact. Most of the time, the ball would either go nowhere, or I’d accidentally kick it too normally, just without much power. Frustrating, but I was determined to get at least one decent one.

Moments of “Hey, That Wasn’t Half Bad!”
After what felt like an eternity, but was probably more like half an hour of looking daft, I started to get a few that were… well, less terrible. They weren’t perfect, not by a long shot. But the ball would pop up a bit, travel the sort of distance I was imagining, and have a bit of an unpredictable bounce. I even managed one that sort of spun sideways, which I thought was pretty neat.
I think the trick was to stop trying to force it and to really focus on that last-second adjustment and the light touch. And you absolutely have to commit to the fake. If you telegraph that you’re doing something tricky, it’s pointless. It’s all about that deception. My kicking leg started to feel a bit tired from all those slightly unnatural movements, though.
So, What’s the Verdict on My Off Side Kick Skills?
Am I ready to call up a coach and offer my services? Not a chance in hell. I’m still miles away from making it look easy or consistent. But, you know what? I actually had a blast trying. It’s satisfying to try and decode something physical like that. I definitely have a newfound respect for the guys who can pull this off in a high-pressure game situation.
I’ll probably head out and try it again sometime. Maybe focus on getting a specific type of bounce. For now, though, I think I’ve had my fill of kicking practice for one day. My dog seems to agree; he’s more interested in chasing squirrels now. It’s funny, the random things you find yourself doing. But hey, it keeps life from getting boring, doesn’t it?
