Woke up the other day, looked outside, and thought, you know what, it’s a perfect day to hit some balls. Had heard about a course out in the west end of Ottawa, never been, so figured why not give it a try. Tossed my clubs in the car, didn’t even bother calling ahead, just decided to head out.
The drive wasn’t too bad, typical Ottawa traffic getting out there, but nothing crazy. Found the place easily enough. Parking lot was moderately full, which is usually a decent sign. Walked up to the clubhouse. Looked like your standard golf clubhouse, nothing too fancy, but clean. The pro shop guy was friendly enough when I went to pay for the round and grab a power cart. Always prefer a cart these days, makes the round a bit easier on the legs.
Getting Started on the Course
Rolled up to the first tee. Nobody waiting, which was nice. Took a practice swing or two. Felt a bit stiff, always do on the first hole. Managed to get the drive away okay, not great, but in play. That’s always the goal for the first one, right? Just get it moving forward.
Played the first few holes. The course seemed pretty straightforward. Wide enough fairways, which is good for someone like me who isn’t always straight down the middle. The grass was cut, looked like they were keeping up with maintenance. Nothing spectacular, but solid. Pace of play was pretty good too, didn’t feel rushed, didn’t have to wait much.
Mid-Round Thoughts
Around the turn, grabbed a quick snack I’d packed. The back nine felt a bit different. Maybe a few more trees, some water hazards to think about. Lost a ball on number 12, sliced it right into the woods. Ah well, happens to the best of us. Didn’t let it ruin the mood though. Just dropped another one and kept going.
Saw a couple of deer near the fairway on 15. That was nice. Always enjoy seeing a bit of wildlife out there. Makes you feel like you’re actually away from the city for a bit. The greens were decent, rolled true enough. Maybe a touch slower than I’m used to, but consistent.
- Overall condition: Pretty good, well-maintained.
- Layout: Fairly open, some challenges but not overwhelming.
- Pace: Moved along nicely.
Wrapping Up the Day
Finished up the 18th hole. Felt good to be done. Wasn’t my best score, wasn’t my worst. Just a decent day out playing golf. Headed back to the clubhouse, returned the cart. Thought about grabbing a beer, but decided to just head home instead. Felt like I’d had enough sun for one day.
So, yeah, that was my day out at that west Ottawa course. It did the job. A solid place to play a round if you’re in the area. Nothing that blew me away, but reliable. Sometimes that’s all you need. Just a place to get out, swing the clubs, and enjoy the weather. Would I go back? Sure, if I was out that way again. It was a perfectly fine way to spend an afternoon.
