Okay, so I wanted to try out this “Liverpool” card game I’d heard about. I’m not gonna lie, I had to look up the rules first. It seemed a bit complicated at first, with all the different rounds and contracts, but I figured the best way to learn was to just dive in.

First, I grabbed a couple of decks of cards, because you need two for this game. I also rounded up my family – gotta have at least three players, and we had four, which was perfect.
Getting Started
We shuffled the decks together really well, and I dealt out the cards, ten to each person for the first round. The rest of the cards went in the middle as a draw pile, and we flipped the top card to start the discard pile.
- Round 1: Two Sets
Now, the first round, we needed to make two “sets” – that’s three of a kind, like three 7s or three Kings. That part I understood well enough. I love playing rummy games.
I picked up my cards and started sorting them. I quickly found that having four Queen’s was a great starting hand and I only drew one card each round untill I managed to go out first. I’ve got to admit, I felt pretty smug about that.
The Following Rounds
The next few rounds got trickier. We had to make combinations of sets and “runs” – runs are cards in order, like 4, 5, 6 of the same suit.

- Round 2: One Set, One Run
- Round 3: Two Runs
- And so on…
It involved a lot of picking up cards from the discard pile if they fit our hand, or drawing from the deck and hoping for the best. There was definitely some luck involved, but also some strategy in deciding what to keep and what to discard.
We had a few arguments. Some were about the rules, and some was my wife accusing me of cheating! But, we also had fun. It was actually a pretty exciting game, especially when someone was close to “going out” – that’s when you get rid of all your cards by laying down your sets and runs.
The Final Result
After seven rounds of play, including the final round of needing to go out with three runs, my wife was declared the winner. Her final score was the lowest as that’s how you win the game! I will get my revenge on her and I demand a rematch!
Overall, I’d say Liverpool is a fun game. Maybe a little hard to grasp at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a good mix of luck and strategy. I would reccomend playing it with family and friends!.
