So, I’d been thinking about catching that Marquette game. For some reason, Ole Miss was stuck in my head as the opponent, but you know how these things go, schedules change, or maybe I just got it mixed up. College basketball season, especially around tournament time, it’s a whole thing.

Getting Ready for the Game

I remember trying to set things up for one of Marquette’s big tournament games. Not too long ago, I think it was one of their opening matches in the NCAA tournament. The plan was simple: get some snacks, find the game on TV, and just chill. Sounds easy, right? Well, not always.

First off, figuring out the channel. Someone mentioned it was supposed to be on TBS. Okay, TBS, got it. Spent a good ten minutes flipping through channels, because of course, the one guide I looked at was probably outdated. You know how that is. Finally found it, just as the pre-game talk was heating up.

The Whole Betting Buzz

Then there’s the whole buzz around the odds and stuff. My buddy, Dave, he’s always into that. He starts rattling off numbers, “Oh, Marquette’s favored, minus 4.5 points, something like that.” I mean, I get it, some folks love that side of it, but sometimes it just adds to the noise. I saw some figures too, like Marquette Golden Eagles at -185, whatever that really means in practical terms for just watching a game. The total points were supposed to be around 152.5, they said. It’s like everyone becomes a stats expert overnight.

  • Trying to find the right channel.
  • Dealing with everyone’s hot takes on the spread.
  • Just wanting to watch the actual basketball.

Anyway, back to my “practice” of trying to have a relaxed game night. So, the game starts. I think Marquette was doing alright, that season they had a pretty decent record, something like 23 wins before heading into the tournament. The team they were actually playing, I think it was New Mexico, they were no slouches either, had a bunch of wins themselves. It was shaping up to be a tight one.

Things Don’t Always Go as Planned

But here’s where my grand plan for a chill evening went a bit sideways. My kid decided that was the exact moment to practice his drumming skills on a set of pots and pans. Amazing timing, truly. Then the dog got excited by the drumming and started barking at the TV. So there I am, trying to follow the plays, listen to the commentary, while there’s a full-blown concert and a canine opera happening in my living room.

I managed to catch bits and pieces. Saw some good plays, some missed shots. The usual rollercoaster of a college game. That whole experience, though, it’s kind of what these big games are about, isn’t it? Not just the score, but the whole chaotic energy around it, even if it’s just in your own house. You try to make it perfect, but life happens. Still, I wouldn’t trade those moments. It’s all part of the fun, I guess. Next time, maybe I’ll invest in some noise-canceling headphones for the big game. Or just send everyone to the park!
