My Little Run-in with a Marvel Rivals Steam Error
Okay, so I was really hyped to jump into Marvel Rivals today. Got it downloaded on Steam, clicked play, and… bam. Error message. Didn’t even launch. Just a generic Steam pop-up saying something went wrong. Not super helpful, right?
First thing I always do with Steam issues, I just closed Steam completely. Made sure it wasn’t running in the background, you know, checked the system tray. Waited a minute, then fired it back up. Tried launching Marvel Rivals again. Nope, same error. Okay, plan B.
Next up, verifying game files. This usually fixes weird download glitches. So, I right-clicked Marvel Rivals in my library, went to Properties, then Local Files, and hit that ‘Verify integrity of game files…’ button. Let it do its thing. It downloaded a small file, maybe something got corrupted? Felt hopeful. Launched the game… still nothing. Ugh.
Alright, getting slightly annoyed now. Thought maybe it was my internet acting up, even though everything else seemed fine. Did a quick speed test, rebooted my router just in case. Waited for the connection to come back up. Tried Marvel Rivals one more time. Still blocked by that error. Double ugh.
What else? Restart the whole computer? Sure, why not. Did the full shutdown, waited a bit, powered it back on. Let everything load up nice and fresh. Went straight to Steam, clicked play on Marvel Rivals… denied! Same stupid error.
At this point, I started thinking maybe it wasn’t just me. Did a quick search online, just typing in the basic error message text. Saw a few people talking about similar problems. Some mentioned things like:
- Checking firewall or antivirus
- Updating graphics drivers
- Running Steam as administrator
Okay, things to try. First, I checked my firewall and antivirus. Nothing seemed obviously blocked, but sometimes they get sneaky. I temporarily disabled my antivirus just to test. Launched the game… SUCCESS! It finally started loading.
So, that was it for me. My antivirus was being a bit overprotective and stopping the game from launching properly. I re-enabled the antivirus, of course, but then went into its settings and specifically added an exception for the Marvel Rivals game folder and its main executable file. Tried launching it again with the antivirus running and the exception in place, and it worked perfectly.
What a hassle for something simple, but hey, that’s computers sometimes. Glad I got it sorted without having to reinstall the whole thing. Hopefully, if you run into the same issue, checking your security software might be the quick fix you need too.
