Okay, so I’ve been getting really into pickleball lately. It’s, like, the perfect mix of fun and exercise, and Irvine has some surprisingly great spots to play. I wanted to document my journey to becoming a, ahem, “proficient” Irvine pickleball player, so here’s how it’s been going.

Finding My First Paddle
First things first, I needed a paddle. I literally knew nothing, so I just went to,you know a sporting goods store.I grabbed one that felt… okay? It was bright green, which I figured was a good start. Looking back, it was probably way too heavy, but hey, I was a complete beginner.
Stepping onto the Court (and Feeling Awkward)
My first time playing was… humbling. I found some public courts near my place. Everyone seemed to know each other, and they were good. Like, really good. I felt totally out of place, fumbling around, missing easy shots, and generally making a fool of myself. I definitely whiffed the ball more times than I’d like to admit.
- First Lesson Learned: Pickleball people are surprisingly welcoming, even when you’re terrible. A few folks gave me some pointers, which was super nice.
Practice, Practice, Practice (and YouTube!)
I was determined to get better. So, I started going to the courts almost every day, even if it was just for 30 minutes to hit against the wall.I watched a ton of YouTube videos. Seriously, there are so many pickleball tutorials out there. I focused on basic stuff: serving, dinking (what even is a dink?), and just trying to keep the ball in play.
Finding My “Pickleball People”
Slowly but surely, I started meeting people. There’s this one regular group that plays in the mornings, and they’re all around my skill level (which is, you know, still not amazing, but improving!). We started playing together, and it’s been awesome. It’s way more fun to play with people who are also learning and aren’t taking it too seriously.
- Second Lesson Learned: Finding a regular group to play with makes a HUGE difference. It’s more fun, and you get better faster.
Still a Work in Progress…
I’m definitely not a pickleball pro yet. Far from it! But I’m having a blast, getting some exercise, and meeting new people. My backhand is still a disaster, and I sometimes forget the score (oops!), but I’m getting there. It’s all about the journey, right?

So, that’s my Irvine pickleball story so far. I’m hooked, and I’m excited to see how much I can improve over the next few months. Maybe one day I’ll even be good enough to join those really good players I saw on my first day… but for now, I’m happy just hitting the ball and having fun.
