Okay, so I wanted to see some pelicans, right? I’d heard about these big birds and wanted to check them out in person. I did some digging and found out a few spots where they hang out.

First, I hit up the Horicon Marsh. I drove along Hwy 49, you know, from Brownsville to Waupun. People online said they saw pelicans there a lot. It was a bit of a drive, but hey, I was determined. I kept my eyes peeled, scanning the marsh. And boom! There they were, these massive white birds, just chilling. It was pretty cool to see them up close.
- Drove along Hwy 49
- Spotted pelicans in Horicon Marsh
- They’re huge!
But I didn’t stop there. I also heard that Green Bay/De Pere was another good spot. So, I made my way up north. The drive was nice, and when I got there, I wasn’t disappointed. I found a good spot near the water and waited. Sure enough, more pelicans! They were soaring around, doing their thing. It was awesome.
Then, because I was feeling adventurous, I decided to check out some parks. I found this list online, the “Top 10 Best Parks to See American White Pelicans.” I picked Reelfoot Lake State Park in Tennessee. It was a bit of a trip, but the park was beautiful. I even took a pontoon boat tour that some rangers were offering. And guess what? More pelicans! They were flying in formation, it was kind of majestic, not gonna lie.
Coastal Areas
I also wanted to see pelicans in a different setting. So, I headed to the coast. Specifically, I went to North Carolina. I read that they hang out in coastal areas, like bays and stuff. I found a nice quiet bay and just sat there for a while. Eventually, I saw some pelicans flying overhead and landing on the water. They were fishing and just being pelicans. It was relaxing to watch them.
Other Options
Now, if you’re not up for a big trip, I also found out that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park has a bunch of pelicans. They’ve got a whole bunch of them, a successful breeding program, apparently. I didn’t make it there this time, but it’s on my list for the future. They’re called Pink Pelicans, which sounds interesting.

So yeah, that’s my pelican adventure. It was a lot of driving and waiting, but totally worth it. Seeing those big birds in their natural habitat was an experience. If you’re into birdwatching or just want to see something different, I definitely recommend it. Just be prepared to put in some miles and have some patience.
