Okay so let me tell you how my day went with that new gadget I got. You know, the one for measuring how fast you swing a golf club. I’d been thinking about it for weeks, finally just pulled the trigger.

Unboxing and First Impressions

The thing arrived in a pretty small box. Nothing fancy inside, just the device itself, some basic instructions folded up, and a couple of those round batteries. Took me all of two seconds to pop the batteries in. Honestly, it feels kinda cheap and plastic-y, but hey, if it gets the job done, right?

Figuring Out the Setup

First dumb move: I tried turning it on indoors. Just flicked the little switch, saw a green light. Cool! Pointed it at myself, took a practice swing… nothing. Zip. Nada. Okay, maybe I need to actually hit a ball? Grabbed my pitching wedge off the rack, laid an old foam ball on the carpet, swung again at it like an idiot in my living room. Still nothing. Glanced back at the instructions. Oh. Right. Big bold part I totally skipped: USE OUTDOORS ONLY. IT NEEDS SPACE. Felt brilliant.

Took everything outside into the backyard. Had a bit more room now. Placed the device down on the patio table, pointed it roughly where I thought the ball flight would be. Instructions mentioned like 5-6 feet behind the ball is where it works best? Eyeballed it.

The Actual Measuring Starts… Kind Of

Placed a real golf ball down. Grabbed my driver this time. Felt a bit self-conscious, neighbors might see. Took a swing. Heard a little “beep”! Looked at the device display. Saw numbers: 87.4 mph. Okay! That’s something! But was it accurate? Seemed kinda slow? Hit a few more:

  • Swing 2: 88.1 mph
  • Swing 3: 92.7 mph (Maybe I went harder?)
  • Swing 4: Beep, but no numbers? Weird. Blank screen.

Great. Was it broken already? Picked it up, turned it off, turned it back on. Fiddled with the angle. Tried again.

Getting Semi-Reliable Numbers

My fifth swing: 89.5 mph. Okay, working again. Maybe I wasn’t standing directly in the path perfectly? Made a conscious effort to swing right through that invisible line the gadget was “watching”. Started getting more readings:

  • Swing 6: 91.2 mph
  • Swing 7: 93.0 mph (Better!)
  • Swing 8: 89.8 mph
  • Swing 9: 90.6 mph
  • Swing 10: Beep… blank again. Argh! Consistency wasn’t its strong suit.

Got frustrated. Put it down, had a sip of water. Moved the position of the gadget slightly, wondering if the patio table wasn’t level. Set it flat on the grass instead.

The “Final” Number?

Took five more swings with the driver. Got four readings this time. Mostly in the low 90s.

  • 90.1
  • 91.7
  • 92.3
  • 90.8

The display showed the last number it caught, which was 90.8 mph. Seemed kinda stuck in that low-90s range most of the time today. Tried one last absolute monster swing… beep… and the display showed 94.1 mph. Not a huge jump, but slightly faster. Felt it too – was definitely going after it.

Wrapping It Up

So, after maybe 25 actual swings (only got about 15 readings), here’s the deal:

  • My average seemed around 91 mph with the driver swinging kinda normal.
  • Managed a peak of 94.1 mph giving it some extra.
  • The gadget works, but you gotta be outdoors, the placement feels finicky, and it misses swings randomly for no obvious reason. Annoying when you’re getting into a groove.

Still, kinda cool to see some actual numbers. More importantly, it gives me something to track. Maybe next weekend I see if I can nudge that average up. It’s not fancy equipment, but for what I paid, it did show me what my swing speed likely is – somewhere in the low 90s when I’m just swinging. Knowing is half the battle, or so they say.
