Pumpsie Green Stats and Facts (First Black Red Sox Player)

Okay, so today I decided to dig into Pumpsie Green’s stats. I’ve always heard the name, knew he was the first Black player for the Red Sox, but I wanted to see the actual numbers.

First, I fired up my trusty old computer. Took a few minutes ’cause it’s, you know, vintage. Then, I started my usual searching.

I started by typing “Pumpsie Green stats” and started from there.

Combing Through the Data

It was interesting seeing the year-by-year breakdown. I bounced back, reviewing it all.

  • 1959: His first year with the Red Sox. Only played 88 games, batting .233. Not stellar, but hey, it was his rookie year, and the pressure must have been immense.
  • 1960: A bit of a jump here – 133 games and a .260 average. He was getting more comfortable.
  • 1961: Dipped a little to .246. Happens to the best of ’em.
  • 1962: His last year with the Red Sox, and it looked rough, only .194 in 19 games. I got a little confused and re-looked for it again.
  • 1963: Jumps to the Mets! That got me checking, He played with Mets, and with a .236 in 85 games.
  • Total:Finally, I reviewed all the stats and his total games, and his total batting average .246.

I have to say, I was a little bit surprised by his carrer total batting average. But this whole deep dive made me realize there’s so much more to a player than just the numbers. It’s the context, the history, the impact. Pumpsie Green was a trailblazer, and that’s way bigger than any stat line.

Anyways, that was my little stats adventure for today. Gonna go make myself a cup of coffee now. Catch ya later!
