Remember Guido Land Before Time? Get the Facts on Guidos Story!

Today, I wanted to mess around with something I’d been eyeing for a while – building a little “Guido’s land” inspired by that classic “The Land Before Time” movie. You know, dinos, volcanoes, the whole shebang. I figured it would be a fun little project to kill some time.

So, first thing I did was gather some materials. I’m not talking fancy stuff here, just some basic things I had lying around the house. I grabbed a big cardboard box that was destined for the recycling bin anyway. This was going to be my base, the foundation for my prehistoric world. Then, I rummaged through my kid’s old toy box and found some plastic dinosaurs – perfect inhabitants for my land.

Next, I started shaping the landscape. I ripped up some old newspapers and scrunched them into balls. These became my mountains and hills. I stuck them onto the cardboard base with some masking tape. It wasn’t pretty, but it was starting to take shape. I also used some smaller pieces of cardboard to make some rocky cliffs and overhangs. Just layered them on and taped them down. Nothing complicated.

  • Collected cardboard, dinosaurs, newspaper, and tape.
  • Formed mountains and hills from scrunched-up newspaper.
  • Created cliffs with layered cardboard.

After that, it was time to add some color. I mixed some paint – browns, greens, a bit of fiery red for the volcano I was planning. I slapped the paint onto the landscape, not really worrying about being neat. I mean, nature isn’t exactly known for its straight lines, right? I even used my fingers to blend some colors together, creating a more “natural” look. While the paint was drying, I fashioned a little volcano out of a toilet paper roll and some more newspaper. I painted it dark gray with red at the top, to make it look like it was about to erupt.

Once everything was dry, I arranged the plastic dinosaurs around the landscape. I had a T-Rex overseeing his domain from a hilltop, a couple of Triceratops grazing in a valley, and a Stegosaurus chilling by a little pond I made from a bottle cap filled with blue-tinted water. For the final touch, I added some green plastic plants I salvaged from an old fish tank decoration. They made for some pretty decent prehistoric ferns and trees.

The End Result

And there it was, my very own “Guido’s Land.” It wasn’t perfect, and it sure wasn’t going to win any awards, but it was fun to make. It took me the better part of an afternoon, and it was a nice way to tap into my creative side and just let loose. Plus, it gave me a chance to relive a bit of my childhood, playing with dinosaurs and making up stories about their adventures. Kind of cheesy, I know, but hey, we all need a little bit of that sometimes, right?

I ended up showing it to my kid, and they were pretty thrilled with it. We even spent some time playing with the dinosaurs and making up a whole story about them escaping the erupting volcano. So, all in all, I’d say it was a successful project. A little rough around the edges, sure, but full of heart. That’s what counts, I guess. Maybe I’ll try building something else next weekend, who knows?
