So, I had this crazy idea the other day – trying out something called a “Robert MacIntyre drop.” Sounds fancy, right? Well, let me tell you, it turned into quite the adventure.
First off, I started digging around to see what this whole “Robert MacIntyre drop” thing was all about. Turns out, it’s named after this Scottish golfer, Robert MacIntyre. I stumbled upon some interesting tidbits about him. The guy’s from Oban, Scotland, and he’s ranked 14th in the world. He apparently played some other sport called shinty before becoming a pro golfer. Also, his dad, Dougie, used to be his caddie, and now it is Mike Burrows, that’s a full-time gig, they work together pretty well apparently since late 2023.
Anyway, back to this drop thing. I found out that MacIntyre had a bit of a rough patch during some tournament. He took a drop on the 16th hole, and it supposedly saved his game or something. I read somewhere that he “suffered one of the most heartbreaking losses” last year, but then he won the Genesis Scottish Open, firing a 67 in the final round. Pretty cool, huh?
I got myself all geared up and headed to the 7th hole (which, for some reason, they were calling the 16th in my notes – go figure). I took a swing with my 7-iron, aiming for that sweet spot about 250 yards away. It wasn’t perfect, but I figured it was a decent start. But then, the rules got a bit fuzzy. People were talking about a “free drop” and a “far more advantageous lie.” I wasn’t sure what any of that meant, but I went with the flow.
- First attempt: Tried the 7-iron shot. Felt okay, but not quite there.
- Second attempt: This time, I took the drop as they did at the Scottish Open. The ball landed about 6 feet from the hole. Felt a lot better.
- Third attempt: I decided to try using 6-iron, it is a bit hard.
After a few more tries, I think I started to get the hang of it. It’s definitely not as easy as it sounds, but it’s a fun challenge. And hey, at least I didn’t cause a “delay” like MacIntyre apparently did at the PGA Championship. That’s a win in my book!
So, that’s my little adventure with the “Robert MacIntyre drop.” It was a bit of a wild ride, but I’m glad I tried it. Maybe one day I’ll be as good as the man himself. Or maybe not. But hey, it’s all about having fun, right?
